  • The murals were commissioned by the Department of Treasury's Section of Painting & Sculpture and installed in 1939.  Painted in the artist's clean, strong, uncluttered style, the murals represent scenes of the local area - a U.S. Forest Service fire tower and miners returning from work.  Mr. Dohanos was impressed by West Virginia's rugged landscape, and the bright colors of Forest Service reflect this natural beauty.  In contrast, the somber tones express the bleak existence illustrated in Mining Village.
