Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity
U.S. General Services Administration
Frederick Shrady’s bronze memorial sculpture—Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity—takes its name from the motto of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. That motto is carved into the sculpture’s black granite base and is emblazoned with gold leaf. Each of the three figures in the sculpture group represents one part of the motto, with their respective values engraved below. Behind them flies a stylized and roughly modeled American flag.
The Society of Former Agents of the FBI, a service and alumni organization, commissioned the statue to memorialize J. Edgar Hoover, to pay tribute to the FBI, and to create a symbol of the dedication of past and present associates of the bureau. The organization partnered with GSA to produce the sculpture, which was completed by Shrady in 1976. Shrady was a painter, sculptor, and veteran who served with the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Section of the Allied armies, better known as the "Monuments Men," during World War II. His father, Henry Merwin Shrady, was also a sculptor and created the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial located adjacent to the Reflecting Pool on the west side of the U.S. Capitol Building.
