GSA commissioned artist Oliver Lee Jackson to create this artwork for the federal building in Oakland. Jackson carved the sculpture at his nearby studio. The obelisk is white Ordinario marble quarried in Carrara, Italy. The base is red and black granite from California.
According to Jackson: "The sculpture was specifically conceived for the plaza area in front of the federal building, situated with regard to the building design, and oriented according to the position of sunrise and sunset at that particular site. While monumental in scale, the sculpture's imagery was conceived to allow an intimate experience for viewers. It has been my hope that the sculpture would be worthy of contemplation, making possible an intimate interaction with the workers and visitors to the plaza."
