  • This painting of the state seal of Indiana is part of the elaborate decorative program created for the ceremonial courtroom in the federal courthouse in Indianapolis.

The artist, Nicola d'Ascenzo (1871–1954), was born in Italy and, at the age of 11, immigrated to the United States with his family, who settled in Philadelphia.

In 1896, following his education and marriage to Myrtle Dell Goodwin (1864–1954), he established and ran a large and successful interior design studio in Philadelphia, which produced stained glass and murals for civic buildings, churches, businesses, and private residences throughout the United States.
