  • The monumental four-ton sculpture Gateway is an example of the abstract geometric forms that predominate the later portions of Konzal's career.  The Cor-ten steel used for Gateway is a copper alloy designed to produce a protective rusted patina that visually enhances the volumetric sculpture.  Konzal asserted that the goal of contemporary

sculpture is "to create a spare, challenging, austere shape-enigmatic and provocative-that will stir the mind and heart, evoking a feeling of strength and confidence."
