  • The geometry of the grains and flowers in both grilles is expressed by the symmetrically place verticals of the grains - three in the case of the corn and four in the wheat.  This structure plays against diagonal elements which are reminiscent of Decor ornament.  The diagonals in the corn are characterized by staccato rhythms, while the sunflowers are by contrast, flowing and sensuous.  While the imagery of the grilles is similar enough to be seen as one work, the asymmetry of their patterns activates their framing presence.  The grilles curve outward to counter the cove in the flutes of the

    columns.
