- Steaming up the river is the "Dubuque III", third in the series of four boats that bore the name of this historic city. The scene is near Dubuque, Iowa at approximate 1870. This fine old boat plied the upper Mississippi for the Northern Packet lines from 1867 to 1876. This steamboat, along with scores of others similar to her, was the primary transportation means of the Midwest before the establishment of railroad lines.
