  • In 2007, Aaron Stephan described the ideas behind his sculpture for the border crossing in Jackman, Maine:

Border crossings witness the intersections of ideas, cultures, and individuals.  On a daily basis, logging truckers, vacationers, hunters, and commuters travese the border of two countries as they pass through the port facility in Jackman.  At this highly symbolic site, abstract ideas of national identity and global interconnectedness become plapable.

Intersect is based on the relationship between individuals and a seemingly abstract global community.I used the idea of a globe as a starting point for this project.  I find globes fascinating in their simple representation of a complex and extraordinary system of lives, structures, and interactions.

The sculpture’s small iron globes serve as connectors between a series of rods reminiscent of complex systems of trees, pipes, or molecular structures, creating a metaphor of lives merging and intersecting through space.  Each component of the sculpture is plays an equal role in defining the unity of the whole.
