  • "Birthplace," a fossil-like ceramic creation from Stephen DeStaebler, was installed in 1987 at  the Old Post Office Building in St. Louis, Missouri.  The high-fired clay wall work measures 10'9" by 6'11" by 20".  The hue of the sculpture, which ranges from light grey to black, was created by baking pigments into the clay.  A faint spectrum of tones ranging from orange to lavender glow across the surface, encouraging a harmonic visual connection between the sculpture and its site.
