Title represents Greek goddess whose chief significance was a personification of retributive justice, a relentless avenger.  One man in the painting is being stopped from committing a crime against his weaker neighbor. White's wife is the model for the Angel and the international strongman Eugene Sandow posed for the central male figure.  Other professional models posed for the remaining figures.
