Wave and Gate

The work consists of two primary elements:  a terrazzo floor covering the entire lobby, mezzanine, and fourth floor and a screen that functions as a security barrier.

Using marble aggregates with green glass and mother of pearl, the terrazzo floor evokes the movement of the water along the gulf coast.  Beginning at the entrance in front of the screen the "waves" are close together.  Walking into the lobby these waves extend further apart representing the experience of walking from the beach into the Gulf.  The rhythm varies through the building evoking a sense of movement and a sense of light.  The amount of green glass used decreases by the fourth floor until at the entrance outside of the judge's chambers it is almost like foam.

The screen creating the front entrance gate and security barrier is fabricated of laser cut steel with a design inspired by Spanish moss, and Live Oaks.  The steel panels are part architectural and part sculptural, and create a mystical and natural quality to the experience of entering the building.

Both of these elements, the floor and the screen, taken together create an environment that is rich in its natural references.  In addition, the old world process involved with making a terrazzo floor and the completely new high-tech process of laser cutting steel are a  unique combination and function together in this work in complete synthesis.
