- The allegorical figures represent History (wearing a bonnet), Agriculture (with a cornucopia), Industry (with a tool), and the Arts (with a flower). Each female has her back to the others at 90 degrees. In the area behind the figures is a large openwork armillary sphere with an equatorial band of copper repousse zodiac figures. Original contracts and correspondence reveal that the Piccirilli Brothers of New York City furnished 3/4" scale models in plaster, as well as 4 full-size plaster models of the seated "ladies", based on the drawings of James Gambel Rogers.
