  • The Treasury Department Section of Fine Arts commissioned this painting and its compliment, Aerodynamics, for the Los Angeles Post Office and Courthouse. Spanish and American Ranchos incorporates an old map of the Spanish and Mexican ranches of early Los Angeles. The left section of the painting depicts the legendary sale of a large part of the city for a barrel of wine, some groceries and two hundred dollars.  The deed of sale is being signed on the wine barrel.  In the left background, a mission is shown. On the right, figures represent the typical life on the early ranches.
