Eagle

Henry Lion was born August 11, 1900, in Fresno, California. He studied with Stanton MacDonaldWright at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. The artist continued to live in Los Angeles until his death in 1966. He was a member of the Los Angeles Art Association, the California Artists Congress, and a founder of the Society of Western Artists. Lion's


works include the De Anza Memorial fountain in Los Angeles, figure sculptures for the Los Angeles City Hall, and works for Ebell College.

These four relief medallions of American eagles were commissioned in 1937 under the Works Progress Administration by the Section of Painting and Sculpture. They were installed on either side of the Main Street and Spring Street entrances in 1938.
