Emil Bisttram

b. 1895, Nagylak, Hungary - d. 1976, Taos, New Mexico
Emil James Bisttram (born Bistrán Emil) was born in Nagylak, Hungary, in 1895 and emigrated to the United States in 1906. In New York, he studied at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and the New York School of Fine and Applied Art, where he became an instructor. In 1931, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to study fresco painting with Diego Rivera in Mexico. In 1932, Bisttram relocated to New Mexico, where he founded the Taos School of Art and the Transcendental Painting Group.
