Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder is widely recognized as one of America’s most influential visual artists. Over a prolific career that spanned more than five decades, he created a celebrated body of formally inventive artwork in a wide array of media.  Calder also introduced movement into sculpture with his mobiles (a word coined to describe his carefully balanced or suspended shapes) and then, late in his career, conceived of the monumental stabile, his publicly scaled sculptures of welded and bolted steel plate that are static, yet appear fluid and airy.  These late works led to the flourishing of public art in plazas around the world, and Flamingo ranks among the most noteworthy examples.
