  • Metamorphosis consists of four sculpted mild steel polychromed screens, paired together, marking the interior rotunda in an organic, fluid fashion.  Paley believes everyone brings their own associations to art and this sculpture's layering of forms and irregularly shaped plates of steel and straight bars that feather out into the lobby, not only soften the space but ignite the imagination for its meaning. Paley, the leading American metalsmith, was self-taught and began his career by designing intricate metal jewelry.  These personal adornments developed into an organic style of architectural ornamentation of gates, bridge railings, light sconces and door handles.  From these, Paley became a sculptor, forging and welding large public pieces that continue his trademark furling and scrolling metal.
