  • Swimmers introduces a sense of quietude to the U.S. Courthouse in Jacksonville, Florida. Composed of 18 glass panels displayed as pairs in the building’s public waiting rooms, Susan Kaprov’s work synchronizes the function of the courthouse with its location. For the series, the artist juxtaposed traditional symbols of justice and emblems of America, such as scales and eagles’ wings, with abstract swatches of saturated color that allude to the tropical Florida landscape. Swimmers’ location parallel to the glass wall of the courthouse allows the layers of modulating hues, figurative imagery and organic forms to appear translucent.
