  • James Cook creates small-scale oil paintings en plein air (a French expression that means “in the open air” and describes the act of painting outdoors) which he transfers to his studio and recreates in a larger format. While Mr. Cook’s use of heavy paint is akin to the Abstract Expressionists he differs from them by providing the viewer with a recognizable subject—the American landscape. The visual drama of Pima Canyon near the western end of the Santa

Catalina Mountains inspired Mr. Cook’s work for the James A. Walsh Courthouse.
