- Visitors approaching the courthouse from either Broadway or the federal plaza will encounter Robert Irwin’s Hedge Wedge, a sculptural ramp of interlocking concrete and steel elements topped by ribbons of deep green privet. Like the grand steps of historic courthouses, Hedge Wedge provides a transition between the bustle of the surrounding city and the ceremonial space of the courthouse. Irwin collaborated closely with the building’s architects, landscape designers, construction engineers and many others in realizing this unique artwork that is a response to the conditions of its site.
