  • The Wheelwright was commissioned in 1941 by the Treasury Department's Section of Fine for the Clayton Branch Post Office in St. Louis, Missouri.  This painting depicts pioneers as they settled the Midwest, a theme that recurs in other murals created by Rhodes.  The two central figures in the mural point to a map of Missouri.  The mural was removed from the Clayton Branch Post Office in 1971 and was transferred and installed in the U.S. Courthouse in Des Moines in 1980.
