  • Blending traditional symbolism with contemporary formal language, the fountain features the head of Themis, the ancient Greek goddess of justice, emerging from a plane of thirteen stripes that represent the American flag.  One of the bands blindfolds the goddess, symbolizing objectivity in the application of law.  This union of Themis' blindfold with the flag also suggests an alliance between national identity and the judicial system.  Framing the work are two stainless steel basins that depict the scles of justice.
