Location
  • Rome is represented by a soldier at the time of Caesar.  Weighs 200 tons. The male figure of Rome stands with his proper right leg bent at the knee, his proper left leg straight.  The hand of his right arm rests on the head of a crouching figure which sits behind and to Rome"s proper right.  Rome wears a costume from the Imperial Roman period. This consists of a military tunic with belted scabbard at his proper left side, boots, and a helmet.  Rome's proper left arm is bent at the elbow.  In his proper left hand he holds a scepter with an eagle terminus figure.  The bottom end of the scepter butts-up against the figure's waist at his proper left side.  The names "F. EDWIN ELWELL S.C. and A. ZELLER ASST" are engraved on the proper left side of the base.  The entire sculpture is carved from one section of Tennessee "marble" limestone.  The alignment between the large carved stone sculpture and the granite base is fairly regular around all sides.
